The phrase “Serve the People” (为人民服务) was famously used by Mao Zedong in a speech on September 8, 1944, during a memorial for Zhang Side, a soldier who died in the line of duty. Mao emphasized the Communist Party’s commitment to selflessness, urging leaders and citizens alike to prioritize the well-being of the masses. This phrase later became one of the central tenets of Communist ideology in China, especially during the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976), when it was widely publicized on posters, banners, and in Mao’s Little Red Book. Symbolizing loyalty, hard work, and dedication to public service, “Serve the People” became a guiding principle for the People’s Liberation Army and was widely embraced by students and workers across the country.
